Gifts At Work
The following contributions have had a positive impacted on the college exprience for students at VVC...
FIRE ENGINES IMPROVE ACADEMY TRAINING
While upgrading their own fleet the Barstow Fire Protection District recognized the need to invest in local firefighter training efforts and offered VVC the opportunity to purchase two full size fire engines at a charitable price. More than 100 donors responded to the Foundation's call for help allowing the college to seize the opportunity to enhance its fire training program. Previously equipment was borrowed from neighboring fire departments during training exercises which while important removed them from service temporarily. Likewise training was often disrupted by the last minute need for the equipment in response to emergencies. This regularly required rescheduling of often complex training programs. The additional engines allow fire academy students more access to training opportunities. The community will benefit from better trained firefighters.
DR. PREM REDDY SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Dr. Prem Reddy's pledge to the Victor Valley College School of Health Sciences that bears his name continues to reap benefits for students pursuing careers in the medical field. This year students in the Respiratory Therapy program will benefit from new ventilators on which to learn skills that save lives. Parmedic students will train using simulator mannequins and Nursing students will receive access to study skills that will help them pass their licensure exams. Dr. Reddy's gift has provided facility remodels, lab upgrades, technology, faculty for additional classes, and brand new equipment to bolster the college's health science education programs in a time when state budgets would not have afforded even the status quo.
DAILY PRESS "LINKS" COLLEGE & COMMUNITY
The Victor Valley Daily Press continues it's generous sponsorship of the Victor Valley College District Foundtion "LINK" this year. This publication provides news and features about the college to the community every other month as an insert in the newspaper.
VERIZON GRANT PROVIDES LAPTOPS FOR LITERACY
The Verizon Foundation recently invested $50,000 in laptop computers for Victor Valley College's basic skills programs. These laptops will make the basic skills lab complete with wireless technology and allow the basic skills curriculum to be taken to off campus sites for better access throughout the high desert community.
CITY OF HESPERIA REMOVES BARRIERS
A Community Development Block Grant awarded by the City of Hesperia to the Victor Valley College Foundation will help the College to remove barriers that inhibit access for seniors and people with disabilities. Most specifically funds provided will allow the college to correct some uneven sidewalk surfaces that challenge wheelchair users and create potential tripping hazards for all students.
